The West African College of Surgeons (WACS) was born in 1973 from the solid foundation and structure of the Association of Surgeons of West Africa (ASWA) whose creation goes back to 1960. From inception to date, the annual conferences of the aforesaid association and its successor, the WACS, were held unfailingly each year. These conferences have thus become part of the pillars of the administration and the tradition of the West African College of Surgeons.

The venue of these conferences has been rotating betweenthefrancophoneandanglophonecountries across West Africainordertosustaintheinterestofall West African countries without any discrimination and to encourage the continued expansion of the WACS. The annual conferences' main objective is to bring together surgeons and related disciplines in the sub-region for scientific exchanges, and implementation of strategies and policies for the developmentof Surgeryin West Africa.

This idea of creation of such an organization that would piece together, in the same crucible, francophone and anglophone surgeons in West Africa was at that time very futuristic; it came up in 1959 from a young Cameroonian surgeon, Dr Victor Anomah Ngu.

The first historical annual conference of WACS was in 1960 and it assembled most of the surgeons of West Africa and of Great Britain and Ireland. At this inaugural conference of WACS, the first president of this new professional and surgical association of West Africa was elected. He was Sir Samuel Manuwa - one of the first surgical specialists in Nigeria and he was also the first African Inspector- Generalofthe Nigerian Medical Services.

Subsequently, the format of the program of the WACS annual conferences was standardized in due course under the leadership of the late Past- President Professor JKM Quartey. The progam highlights of these conferences are well established and scrupulously followed by the various local organizing committees under the supervision of the Secretary Generalofthe WACS.

Apart from this first historical conference, the main achievement of the first decade of the history of the annual conferences (1960-1970) was the adoption, at the annual general meeting of January 1964 during the 4th annual conference in Lagos, Nigeria, of the constitution of the Association of Surgeons of West Africa and the establishment of its first journal for the dissemination of the scientific studies of its members: the West African Medical Journal. From its inception, the West African Medical Journal becamethemajorplatformforthedisseminationof the scientific research works of fellows presented at the annual conference of the West African College of Surgeons.

The second decade (1970-1980) was characterized by 4 major achievements: the official launching of the West African College of Surgeons on Thursday, January 4th, 1973 at Benin-City, Nigeria during the 13th annual conference; the final adoption at the annual general meeting of the first constitution of the WACS on Wednesday, January 29th, 1975 at the annual Conference in Lagos, Nigeria; the first statutory lecture of the WACS in memory of its first President, Sir Samuel Manuwa, who died on Tuesday, September 16th, 1975. The lecture took place on Tuesday, January 29th 1980 at the 20th annual conference in Enugu, Nigeria and was delivered by Dr. M.A Majekodunmi and the topic entitled: Health Service Administration in Nigeria. And the fourth and final achievement during this period was the establishment of the West African Journal of Medicine - the successor of the West African Medical Journal as the new official journal of both the West African College of Surgeons and the West African College of Physicians.

The third decade (1980-1990) was dominated by a major landmark: the celebration of the Silver Jubilee of the WACS in Abidjan, Cote d'Ivoire from January 27th to February 2nd 1985. From this date, the maturation of the WACS annual conferences started, and associated with a very true conferences 'growth , an increasing scientific sessions, papers presented covered scientific works in all surgical fields and allied specialties because of the continuously growing number of fellows – both by examination and as honorary Fellows of WACS.

The remarkable event of the fourth decade (1990- 2000) was without any doubt the 40th annual conference of the Year 2000 which symbolized WACS's entry in the new millennium at the historic city of Kumasi, Ghana where in April 1960, Dr. Victor Anomah Ngu and his wife went to meet with Dr. Charles Bowesman for transformation of his dream to reality: the creation of a forum to share practical experiences between surgeons of West Africa. This conference was a success attested by a larger number of scientific sessions and paper presentation than in the 1985 silver jubilee year of the WACS: 19 scientific sessions versus 10 in 1985 and 101 scientific paper presentations versus 60 in 1985. In addition, it was in Kumasi, during the 40th annual conference, on 21st - 22nd February, 2000 at the Anatomy Department of the Medical School, that the First Basic Surgical Skills Course in the history of the College, was held under the mentorship of Professor BF Ribiero, FRCS, President of the Association of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland(ASGBI) and Professor RHS Lane, Honorary Secretary of ASGBI. Since then, this course has been disseminated across West Africa and now, it is a College based course.

We will not forget that during this decade that the College endowment fund was established for any member country hosting the annual conference of the College. The first beneficiary countries were: Nigeria in 1990, Togo in 1991, Gambia in 1992, Benin in 1993 and Ghana in 1994.

The fifth decade (2000-2010) was that of the Golden Jubilee of the WACS in 2010 at Calabar, Nigeria, at the 50th annual conference from February 6th - 13th, 2010. It was at this conference that the launching of the 50- year history book of the WACS ”Knife in Hand” held as well as the First Surgical Outreach Programme organized on behalf the WACS by UK-Forum: a group of WACS Fellows working in the United Kingdom. This humanitarian activity was carried out in two general hospitals in Calabar suburbs to the benefit of patients in these low-income communities.

This decade gave birth to an another milestone in the history of our College: the first lecture in the second statutory lecture of the College in memory of Professor Victor Anomah Ngu, pioneer of the ASWA and first Secretary General of the WACS of which he was the 6th President (1971-1973). Professor Victor Anomah Ngu passed away on June 15th,2011 in his native land, Cameroon. The first “ Victor Anomah NGU' ' lecture was given by Past-President Professor OO Ajayi on Tuesday, 30th January,2001 at Palais des Congrès at the time of the 41th annual conference on the topic : That Youth may grow and prosper.

The sixth decade is in progress (2010-2020) and it began with a historical event at the opening ceremony of the 55th annual conference in Abidjan, Cote d'Ivoire on Monday, 2nd March, 2015 at Palais des congrès(Sofitel-Hotel Ivoire):the launching of the fund raising campain for the building of the permanent secretariat of the WACS at Yaba, Lagos, Nigeria. The foundation laying ceremony of this new WACS project was held on Tuesday, July 8th, 2014. It was also at that annual conference that the process of validation of the new constitution of our College started; its final adoption by all the Fellows at the Annual General Meeting is expected to take place during the 56th annual conference of the WACS in Yaounde, Cameroon in February 2016.

The beginning of this new decade 2010 - 2011 was also characterized by two official launchings at the opening ceremony of the 51st Annual Conference Abidjan/Dakar in 2011 on Saturday 2 July 2011 in the auditorium of the Meridien President Hotel in Dakar: the presentation by Professor SA.Adebonojo of the French version of the history book of the College "Knife in Hand" translated by Prof. Fru AngwaforIII ; 50 copies were offered to the College by the Chairman of the Local Organising Committee, Professor KH. Yangni Angate. The second was the presentation by Professor SA Adebonjo as presenter of the Journalofthe West African Collegeof Surgeons asthenew scientific journalofthe College.

The statutory lectures of the College are Sir Samuel Manuwa and Victor Anomah Ngu lectures which continue and will continue to feed and enrich the quality of the WACS annual conferences.

The Sir Samuel Manuwa lecture is at its 18th edition; it has allowed WACS Fellows to open widely their own professional, academic, teaching and research horizons through the excellent lectures given by distinguished professionals or researchers carefully chosen.

The Victor Anomah Ngu lecture (7 editions to date) give opportunity to young fellows of the WACS to present the results of their own research works and to be recognized as distinguished fellows of the College; the awardees are selected after a rigorous evaluation of their curriculum vitae and scientific performances by a jury approved by the Council of the College.

At each annual conference, different prizes are also offered such as the West African Health Organisation Prize for the best scientific paper presented by trainees in each faculty; the Jim Nwobodo Prize for the best scientific paper by a graduating fellow of the College and the Ethicon Prize for the best scientific paper by a young fellow of the College.

There is another award which has a great significance, that of the celebration by the College, of the priceless achievements of an exceptional Professor KH Yangni-Angate, President WACS initiated another WACS-based surgical outreach program to coexist with the ones during WACS conferences. The historical and inaugural outreach based on this consideration was carried out in Abuja at Garki General Hospital and other hospitals managed by Fellows of WACS at no cost to the patients and completely sponsored by WACS Fellows from January 26th - 30th,2015 anchored by Dr I.Wada, Professor B. Ekele, Professor Terna Yawe and Dr O. E. Babalola. The idea is to stretch out this initiative to all the member countries.

In conclusion, the West African College of the Surgeons is still running towards its 75th anniversary and thereafter its centenary. The WACS main goal is to never move backward, and always moving and reaching the highest top of the hill; its humanity, its moral integrity and values, its ideal to help all the patients, to offer high quality of care to them and to provide the best training programmes to its trainees and future surgeons and specialists, remain the cornerstone of its activities through its annual scientific conferences towhichwewishsunnydaysnowandinthefuture.

Le Collège Ouest Africain des Chirurgiens (COAC) naquit en 1973 des entrailles de l'Association des Chirurgiens d'Afrique de l'Ouest dont la création remonte à 1960 ; depuis cette année-là à ce jour, les conférences annuelles de ladite association puis du COAC se sont régulièrement tenues ; si bien que celles-ci font partie à l'heure actuelle des piliers du fonctionnementetdelatraditiondu COAC.

Le lieu de ces conférences a toujours été tournant au sein des pays de l'Afrique de l'Ouest ; ceci, dans l'optique de les intéresser sans exclusive à la vie du Collège et à ses conférences dont l'objectif est de réunir l'ensemble des chirurgiens et disciplines connexes aux fins d'échanges scientifiques puis de mise en œuvre des stratégies et politiques de développementdelachirurgieen Afriquedel'Ouest.

Cette idée de création d'une organisation qui réunirait, dans un même creuset, chirurgiens francophones et anglophones de l'Afrique de l'Ouest était à l'époque très futuriste ; elle émana en 1959 du jeune chirurgien, le Docteur Victor Anomah NGU;

La première conférence annuelle historique de 1960 réunit des chirurgiens d'Afrique de l'Ouest et de l'Est, de Grande-Bretagne et d'Irlande ; à la suite de celle-ci, fut élu le premier président de cette nouvelle association ouest africaine des chirurgiens : '' Sir Samuel MANUWA'', un des premiers chirurgiens du Nigéria et le premier africain Inspecteur-Général desservicesde Santédu Nigéria.

Secondairement, le déroulé des conférences annuelles, leur contenu notamment a été affiné au fil du temps sous la houlette de Feu le Professeur JKM Quartey, ancien Président du COAC(1977-1979) si bienqu'aujourd'hui undescriptifdudéroulementde ces conférences est bien établi et scrupuleusement suivi par les différents comités d'organisation sous le regarddu Secrétaire Généraldu COAC.

En dehors de cette première conférence historique, la première décennie de l'histoire des conférences annuelles (1960-1970) a été marquée par l'adoption, en assemblée générale de Janvier 1964 en la 4e conférence annuelle à Lagos (Nigéria), de la constitution de l'Association des Chirurgiens de l'Afrique de l'Ouest et de son premier organe de diffusion des travaux scientifiques de ses membres : le ''Journal Médical Ouest- Africain''.

Au cours de cette période, ces conférences ont contribué à l'envolée scientifique chirurgicale de l'Afrique del'Ouestcarellespermirentledéroulement de plusieurs sessions scientifiques et la présentation denombreusescommunicationsorales.

La deuxième décennie (1970-1980) a été caractérisée par 4 étapes majeures qui ont retenu notre attention : le lancement officiel du Collège Ouest Africain des Chirurgiens (COAC) le jeudi 4 Janvier 1973 à Benin-City(Nigeria) à la 13e conférence annuelle; l'adoption finale enassembléegénéralede la première constitution du COAC le mercredi 29 Janvier 1975 à la conférence annuelle à Lagos (Nigeria) ; ladélivrancedelapremièreconférence du COAC à la mémoire de son premier Président '' Sir Samuel MANUWA'' décédé le mardi 16 septembre 1975 ; elle eût lieu le mardi 29 Janvier 1980 à la 20e conférence annuelle à Enugu (Nigeria) et fut prononcée par le Dr M.A MAJEKODUNMI sur le

thème '' Administration des Soins de Santé au Nigéria'' ; et, enfin lamiseenplacedu ''Journal Ouest –Africain de Médecine'' qui succède au ''Journal Médical Ouest –Africain'' comme journal officiel du Collège Ouest Africain des Chirurgiens et du Collège Ouest Africaindes Médecins.

La troisième décennie (1980-1990) est dominée par un repère majeur: la célébration du 25e anniversaire ou des Noces d'Argent du COAC à Abidjan (Côte d'Ivoire) du 27 Janvier au 2 Février 1985; durant cette période, les conférences annuelles amorcent leur maturation et leur véritable expansion avec un accroissement des sessions scientifiques et du nombre des activités scientifiques dans toutes les spécialités chirurgicales et connexes du fait de la croissance de l'effectif des''Fellows'' du COAC.

Le fait remarquable de la quatrième décennie (1990- 2000) estsansnuldoutela 40econférenceannuellede l'An 2000 marquant l'entrée du COAC dans le nouveau millénaire à partir de la ville historique et symbolique de Kumasi (Ghana) où se rendit en Avril 1960 le Dr Victor Anomah NGU et son épouse à la rencontre du Dr Charles BOWESMAN pour y prolonger etréalisersonrêve: lacréationd'unforum d'échanges entre Chirurgiens de l'Afrique de l'Ouest, point de départ du futur COAC. Cette conférence a été un succès, attesté par le nombre plus élevé de sessions et de communications scientifiques qu'en 1985, année de la 25e conférence annuelle : 19 sessions scientifiques versus 10 en 1985 et 101 communications versus 60 en 1985. En outre, c'est à Kumasi, au cours de la 4Oème conférence annuelle, les 21 Février et 22 Février, 2000 au département d'anatomie de la faculté de médecine, que le premier cours sur l'acquisition des compétences chirurgicales de base, a eu lieu sous la supervisiondu Professeur BFRibeiro, FRCS, Président de l'Association des Chirurgiens de Grande-Bretagne et d'Irlande (ACGBI) et du Professeur RHS Lane, Secrétaire Honoraire de l'ASGBI. Depuis lors, ce cours a été diffusé à travers l'Afrique de l'Ouest et maintenant, il est obligatoire dans le programme de formationdesfutursspécialistesdu Collège.

Nous n'oublierons pas qu'au cours de cette décennie fut institué le fonds de soutien financier du COAC à tout pays membre abritant la conférence annuelle dudit Collège ; les premiers pays bénéficiaires furent : le Nigéria en 1990, le Togo en1991, la Gambie en 1992, le Bénin en 1993 et le Ghana en 1994.

La cinquième décennie (2000-2010) est celle du 50e anniversaire ou Jubilé d'Or du Collège, qui figure en lettres d'Or au registre des conférences annuelles dudit Collège ; c'est à Calabar(Nigéria) que fut célébré cet anniversaire en 2010 lors de la 50e conférence annuelle du 6 Février au 13 Février de cette même année. Cette conférence a été marquée par la publication du livre des 50 années d'histoire du Collège et par l'organisation de la 1ère campagne d'interventions chirurgicales gratuites par le COAC en collaboration avec ses membres exerçant en Grande- Bretagne réunis en un groupe appelé « United-Kingdom-Forum ou UK-Forum » Cette activité humanitaire a été effectuée dans deux hôpitaux généraux aux alentours de Calabar au profit de patients à faibles revenus.

Cette décennie a aussi donné jour a une autre borne jalonnant le parcours de notre Collège :la tenue de la conférence inaugurale et statutaire du Collège en la mémoire du Professeur Victor Anomah NGU ,pionnier et premier Secrétaire Général du COAC dont il fut le 6e Président (1971- 1973). Son âme s'est éteinte le Mercredi 15 juin 2011, dans son pays natal, le Cameroun- Cette première conférence'' Victor Anomah NGU'' a été délivrée le Mardi 30 Janvier 2001 au Palais des

Congrès lors de la 41e conférence annuelle à Nouakchott (Mauritanie), par le Professeur OO AJAYI sur le thème : « La Jeunesse peut grandir et prospérer »

La sixième décennie en cours (2010-2020) débute avec un événement capital vécut lors de la cérémonie d'ouverture de la 55e conférence annuelle le lundi 2 Mars 2015 à l'Auditorium du Palais des Congrès de l'Hôtel Ivoire-Sofitel à Abidjan(Cote d'Ivoire) ;Il s'agit d'une première dans l'histoire du Collège : le lancement de la campagne de levée de fonds en faveur de la construction du secrétariat permanent du Collège à Yaba, Lagos(Nigeria) dont la pose de la première a été faite le Mardi 8 juillet 2014. C'est également lors de l'assemblée générale de cette conférence que fut entamé le processus de validation de la nouvelle constitution de notre Collège dont l'adoption finale se fera à la 56e conférence annuelle du Collège à Yaoundé (Cameroun).

Nous remarquerons que le début de cette nouvelle décennie 2010-2011 est aussi caractérisée par deux autres lancements officiels ayant eu cours en la cérémonie d'ouverture de la 51ème conférence annuelle Abidjan/Dakar 2011, le Samedi 2 juillet2011 à l'auditorium de l'Hôtel Méridien Président de Dakar :la présentation par le Professeur SA.Adebonojo de la version française du livre d'histoire du Collège « Bistouri en Main » traduite par le Professeur Fru AngwaforIII et dont les exemplaires au nombre de 50 ont été offerts au Collège par le Président du Comité Local d'Organisation ,le Professeur KH Yangni-Angaté ;le second, toujours avec le Professeur SA Adebonjo comme présentateur, est celui du « Journal du Collège Ouest Africain des Chirurgiens » nouvel organe de diffusion scientifique du COAC.

Les conférences statutaires du collège ont continué et continuent d'alimenter et d'enrichir la qualité scientifique des conférences annuelles ; il s'agit de celles dédiées à ''Sir Samuel MANUWA'' et au ''Professeur Victor Anomah NGU''.

La Conférence ''Sir Samuel MANUWA'' est à ce jour à sa 18e édition ; elle donna l'occasion d'élargir les horizons professionnels, académiques, pédagogiques et de recherche des membres du Collège grâce à la prestation de professionnels ou chercheurs de grand prestige choisis selon des critères très sélectifs.

La Conférence ''Victor Anomah NGU'' est à sa 7è édition en 2015; elle a permis de mettre en lumière les résultats des recherches et les talents des plus méritants jeunes ''Fellows'' du Collège sélectionnés à la suite d'une évaluation rigoureuse de leur curriculum vitae et travaux scientifiques par un jury adopté par le Conseil du Collège.

Les conférences annuelles ont également pour particularité de permettre l'attribution de Prix dont celui offert par l'Organisation Ouest Africaine de la Santé (Prix OOAS) pour la meilleure communication décerné à un résident en chirurgie, et le Prix Jim NWOBODO pour la meilleure présentation scientifique attribué à un nouveau ''Fellow'' admis lors de la conférence annuelle en cours.

Président du Collége en étroite collaboration avec l'ensembledes« Fellows» du Collégeà Abuja dontle Docteur I.Wada ,les Professeurs B.Ekélé ,Terna Yawe et le Docteur OE.Babalola ,têtes de pont ,a eu lieu à Abuja(Nigéria) du 26 au 30 janvier 2015 principalement au « Garki Hospital » et autres hôpitauxdeladiteville.

En conclusion, le Collège Ouest Africain des Chirurgiens court allègrement vers son 75e anniversaire puis son centenaire ; il court vers des sommets plus élevés; son humanité, son intégrité et valeurs morales, son idéal de venir en aide à tous les malades, deleuroffrirdessoinsdehautniveauetde fournir une formation la meilleure possible à ses futurs chirurgiens et spécialistes constituent l'épine dorsale de ses actions ayant pour vitrine les conférences annuelles auxquelles nous souhaitons debeauxjoursetunavenirdesplusradieux.
